Are emotions rational or irrational?

Emotions have a rational basis (are caused by events) but become irrational by our conscious. The emotion of being sad due to grief is rational, but the depression that can follow can be considered irrational. There’s nothing wrong with irrational thoughts/emotions, as long as we remain aware of the fact they are baseless. Otherwise they become delusion if we start to believe our irrationality is reality.
