Would you kill one person you love to save 100 strangers? Would you kill 100 strangers to save the one you love?
It’s better to die than kill
As a Stoic philosopher, I believe that every individual has inherent worth and dignity, and that it is never acceptable to intentionally harm another person, regardless of the circumstances.
The scenarios you presented involve difficult moral choices, and from a Stoic perspective, the most ethical course of action would be to seek a solution that avoids harming others, whenever possible.
If faced with the scenario of having to kill one person I love to save 100 strangers, I would explore all possible options to find a solution that would minimize harm to all parties involved. I would consider factors such as the likelihood of success in saving the 100 strangers, the value of the life of the person I love, and the ethical implications of intentionally causing harm to another person.
Similarly, in the scenario of having to kill 100 strangers to save the one I love, I would explore alternative solutions that would not involve causing harm to others. It is not ethical to harm innocent individuals to save someone else, even if that person is someone I love deeply.
